About Prof. Dr. Sruti Bandopadhay

Prof. Dr. Sruti Bandopadhay (born 8th October 1962) is an ideal combination of a performer-scholar in the dance field of India. A Sangeet Natak Akademi Puraskar for Contribution in Manipuri dance, she is one of the leading exponents of Manipuri Dance dedicated to propagate Manipuri dances outside the boundaries of Manipur. She is a 'Top' Grade artist of Manipuri Dance (from 1998) in Doordarshan being trained under such famous personalities like Guru Bipin Singh, Guru Kalavati Devi, Padmasree Guru Darshana Jhaveri, Ojha Babu Singh, Ojha Gourakisor Sharma, Prof. Jiten Singh and has performed in major festivals in India and abroad. She is a recognized artist of Sangeet Natak Acadmey,Indian Council for Cultural Relations, Eastern Zonal Cultural Center and other cultural institutions in India. She has choreographed a number of productions that have brought her acclaim and honor.

In her scholastic endeavor she is PhD (1996) from Rabindra Bharati University and D.Litt (2010) from Visva Bharati, Santiniketan. She is awarded with the Visiting Lecturer Fulbright Fellowship (2007) and the Academic Staff Commonwealth Fellowship (2012) to lecture and perform on Indian dances in USA and UK respectively. She was Professor in Dance at the Department of Dance, Rabindra Bharati University and is at present engaged as a Professor in Manipuri Dance at Sangit Bhavan, Visva Bharati Santiniketan. She regularly performs, lectures and writes on dance. She has 7 books to her credit and several number of articles have been published in international and national journals.

Her recent publication Rabindranritya: the dance idiom of Tagore was released by the Governor of West Bengal, Sri Jagdip Dhankhar, in September 2019.

She has been the supervisor for PhD candidates. 20 candidates have already been successfully awarded PhD degree, 3 submitted and 3 are working at present under her.

She is awarded the Devadasi Rashtriya Samman at Bhubaneswar recently. She was also awarded the Sri Lalit Kala Academy Award from Mysore in 2009.

MANIPURI DANCE

Manipuri dance includes several categories of dances. The ancient form is found in the Laiharaoba festival. The word Lai means God and the word Haraoba means merrymaking. So Laiharaoba means merrymaking of Gods.

The dance form of Rabindranritya Natya is the pure classical based dance form that was invented and devised by the first noble laureate from Asia, the world renowned Indian poet, Rabindranath Tagore. As the name suggests, Rabindranritya is a title given to pay homage to the creation of Tagore.

Indian Classical dance includes both abstract or pure dance (nritta), consisting of stylised movements and poses and footwork of complex rhythms, and representational dance (nritya) which is suggestive, interpretative and expressive, with every movement and gesture invested with meaning.
